The Pegasus In Detroit's Greektown
Hey all!
Today, we’re dining at Pegasus Taverna in Detroit's vibrant Greektown. This historic entertainment district recently underwent a massive transformation, converting the entire stretch into a pedestrian-friendly, paver-bricked promenade where cars are no longer allowed. Located right next to the entrance of Hollywood Casino (still affectionately known as Greektown Casino to locals), Pegasus has been a staple of the neighborhood for decades.
The menu offers a wide variety of classic Greek specialties alongside Detroit staples you’d expect to find at a classic coney island, including their famous Saganaki—flaming cheese served tableside with a dramatic flourish. Inside, the restaurant is warm and inviting, featuring dark wood lattices, elegant chandeliers, faux grapevines, and a ceiling draped in twinkling string lights that give it a festive, year-round festive feel.
To kick off the meal, we were brought a warm bread basket with butter. For the main courses, I ordered the Roasted Chicken, which featured a tender, half-roasted bird served with vegetables and a choice of potato or rice. It was exceptional—the chicken was incredibly juicy and packed with flavor, and the seasoned rice featured a rich tomato-based sauce on top. We also shared the Pastitsio, a unique Greek comfort dish that essentially serves as the Mediterranean cousin to lasagna, layering tubular macaroni and seasoned ground meat under a thick, golden cap of rich béchamel sauce.
Overall, Pegasus remains a beloved Detroit institution that continues to live up to its reputation for serving some of the best Greek food in the city.
