The Notebook at The Fischer Theater

Today, we attended a performance of The Notebook at the Fisher Theatre. Adapted from Nicholas Sparks’ beloved novel (with the script written by Bekah Brunstetter), the musical features impressive set design—ranging from a clinical hospital setting to iconic locations from the story, like the lake house. While it captures the same emotional depth as the original book and movie, the show weaves in moments of comedy to lighten the mood. The music is fantastic, and while it touches on some darker themes, the content remains family-friendly—though it is recommended for ages 12 and up. One of the standout highlights is a stunning live-rain effect right on stage. Overall, we really enjoyed it—it’s a wonderful romance if you’re looking for a great night out at the theater!
The Plot:
Set during a single, unforgettable summer, The Notebook follows the fiery, transformative romance between Allie, a spirited young woman from a wealthy family, and Noah, an earnest, working-class young man. Though their deep connection seems unbreakable, Allie’s status-conscious parents object to the relationship and force them apart at the end of the season. Miscommunications, societal expectations, and years of intercepted letters keep them separated as life takes them on wildly different paths—Allie moves on to become engaged to a wealthy fiancé, while Noah pours his heart into restoring the coastal home he always promised to build for her.
Years later, a newspaper clipping about Noah’s restored house draws Allie back into his life, prompting an emotional reunion where their unextinguished feelings immediately resurface. Allie is forced to choose between the comfortable, expected life laid out for her and the soul-deep love she shares with Noah. Decades after making her choice, their story unfolds in its final stage: an elderly Noah sits by Allie’s side in a nursing home, patiently reading their love story from a handwritten notebook. Though Allie is now battling severe dementia, Noah’s devotion remains absolute, using their shared history to coax back fleeting, cherished moments where she remembers who he is and the extraordinary life they built together.
